Rutgers University Libraries Launches Beta of Innovative VR Experience: "The Identity Project Book"

Rutgers University Libraries is thrilled to introduce the beta version of an immersive virtual reality artists book, "The Identity Project Book." Created for the 2022 New Jersey Book Arts Symposium, this groundbreaking project showcases the power of books and art in shaping our understanding and experiences of identity. "The Identity Project Book" takes users on a unique, interactive journey of self-discovery using state-of-the-art VR technology. This one-of-a-kind experience delves into the intricate aspects of identity, offering insights into the factors that define who we are. The project is a collaborative effort by artist Béatrice Coron, Virtual Worlds Director Richard Anderson, and Rutgers Digital Initiatives and Emerging Technologies Librarian Sonia Yaco. The team aims to create an engaging, educational journey into Béatrice's imagination, enabling users to explore themselves and the world in a fresh, innovative way. "A space to wander among images and words, I explore the notion of identities in this utopian construction challenging the idea of a 'real' self. 'The Identity Project Book' is at once a book, a library, and a maze," says Coron. "Libraries hold more than objects such as books and digital images, they also provide pathways to exploration of self and belonging," said Yaco, emphasizing Rutgers Libraries' commitment to fostering a sense of community for students. Anderson encourages feedback as the project continues to evolve, with contests and invitations for user experiments posted on the project blog. "The Identity Project Book" is slated for first phase project in late 2023.
